About My Illinois Savings

My Illinois Savings, formerly known as Illinois Secure Choice, is a state-facilitated retirement savings program that gives Illinois workers a simple way to save their own money for the future. The program is designed to be easy for workers to use and straightforward for employers to facilitate.

The program is available to workers whose employers do not offer a qualified retirement plan. It is also available to people who choose to sign up on their own, including self-employed individuals.

Under Illinois law, businesses must participate in My Illinois Savings or offer a qualified retirement plan if they:

  • Had at least five Illinois employees in every quarter of the previous calendar year
  • Have been in business for two or more years
  • Do not currently offer or contribute to a qualified retirement plan

Workers who participate in My Illinois Savings are automatically enrolled in a default target-date Roth IRA with a default 5% payroll contribution. Participants can change their contribution amount, select a different investment option, or opt out of the program at any time. Accounts are owned by the individual participant and stay with the worker from job to job.

Employers register for the program, provide employee information to create accounts, and facilitate payroll contributions. Unlike a traditional employer-sponsored retirement plan, employers are not plan fiduciaries, do not pay program fees, do not contribute to employee accounts, and are not responsible for plan administration or investment decisions.

My Illinois Savings is overseen by a seven-person Board, with Illinois State Treasurer Michael Frerichs serving as Chair. The Illinois State Treasurer’s Office administers the program on behalf of the Board and works with private-sector financial service firms for recordkeeping, custodial, and investment management services.

Program Overview

The Illinois Secure Choice Savings Program Act [820 ILCS 80] establishes a state-facilitated retirement savings program, now known as My Illinois Savings, for private-sector workers in Illinois who do not have access to a qualified employer-sponsored retirement plan.

As of May 2026, 170,151 Illinois workers have enrolled in the program and have saved more than $339 million for retirement. More than 25,000 employers are registered across the state, with participation represented in all 102 Illinois counties.
